About Derwas of Welshpool
The origin of today's Derwas business, run by Kaye Derwas, was in the 1950s when her grandfather established the ironmongers 'Denbigh & Co' in Welshpool High Street. In 1961 Kaye's grandfather set up a new business for her father and his brother, called 'Derwas Bros Agricultural Ironmongers and Seed Merchants'. This was based at 4 Berriew Street, Welshpool.
The business traded in tractors and farm machinery as well as ironmongery and seeds for farms in the area, and there was a storage yard at Oak Gardens where Morrisons supermarket is based today. The business thrived and hardware and cookers were soon added to the range of goods sold.
In 1990 the shop was moved to Oak Gardens due to an increase in business and the on-street parking problems associated with large articulated delivery vehicles. Although the two bases were just 200 yards apart, the Oak Gardens site had plenty of room for large vehicles to turn around and deliver in peace.
The original shop was then rented. Kaye joined the business in 1992 and worked alongside her father and her brother Adrian - a qualified agricultural engineer and who had been with the company since 1986.
Kaye developed the heating and cooking side of the business, introducing new products to customers including stoves, cookers, woodburners and fireplaces. In 1999 a compulsory purchase order was placed on Oak Gardens so that a supermarket could be built. The Derwas business then moved to its current location on the Henfaes Lane Industrial Estate in premises formerly occupied by Bookers Cash and Carry.
Today we have nine staff, much larger premises and a far wider range of goods attracting a much broader customer base. But we still have many valued customers who remember our name from the old days and who know that we still stock all the hard-to-find items of hardware and ironmongery for their farms, gardens and estates.

We've been a Rayburn main dealer since 1961 and we still have a full range of spares for ranges of that vintage. There aren't many places left who can say that!
